Staying safe

Using the noticeboard safely

Remember that any details you post on this noticeboard are visible to anyone and everyone.

If you are a solo walker looking for companions, you may wish to advertise without posting the specific details of your planned departure time or route. This noticeboard allows you to communicate with other members via email and via "private messages" - so you can confirm the fine details in private to other interested members that you trust.

If you are meeting a new walking partner for the first time, common sense suggests that you do this in a public place. Make sure that somebody knows where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you are expected back - or even better, take a friend along.

Taking responsibility for yourself

We advise that prospective companions take time to assess whether their expectations and experience levels are compatible, and whether each person has adequate fitness, suitable equipment and appropriate navigation skills for the proposed route and possible weather conditions.

All participants walk at their own risk. People advertising for companions are not to be treated as walk "leaders" or "guides", and can not be expected to take any responsibility for the wellbeing or safety of those who choose to walk with them.

If you wish to join some officially guided walks in the area, why not participate in the Drovers' Tryst Walking Festival?

If you wish to receive formal training in outdoor skills, we recommend the courses offered at Glenmore Lodge, Scotland's National Outdoor Training Centre.
